Dynamic Search Ads Are Retiring: Your AI Max Migration
Google is retiring Dynamic Search Ads in favour of AI Max. The migration timeline, what changes structurally, and how to protect your Search coverage.
Google announced in April 2026 that Dynamic Search Ads would auto-upgrade to AI Max, and the upgrade begins from September 2026. Google now describes AI Max as the next iteration of DSA, and the final automatic migration is scheduled to begin in February 2027. If you have a DSA campaign quietly generating cheap branded and long-tail traffic, that campaign is on a deadline whether or not you have read the announcement.
The timeline
The migration is staged, and the stages are public. If you have a DSA campaign that quietly earns you branded and long-tail traffic at low cost, nobody needs to tell you before Google does it for you.
- April 2026 — Google announces DSA will auto-upgrade to AI Max, starting September
- September 2026 — auto-upgrade begins
- February 2027 — final automatic migration begins
- AI Max for Search campaigns has been live since Google Marketing Live, May 2026
- AI Max reached 500,000+ advertisers in its first year
Why Google is doing this
DSA was a keywordless format: Google generated queries from your website content and bid on them. AI Max does the same job with the addition of advertiser input — your ads, your site content, your data signals — so it can find queries your existing targeting never covered. Google has also spent 2026 adding the controls that DSA never had, including AI Brief, which lets you steer the AI in your own words, and a unified reporting view that traces a search from query to ad to landing page.
- AI Max combines your ads and site content with signals to discover queries beyond your keyword list
- AI Brief lets you give the AI business context, audience and messaging in your own words
- AI Brief closed beta extended to Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish in September 2026
- Unified AI Max reporting shows the search term, the creative served and the landing page in one view
What structurally changes in your account
The practical shift is that DSA was hands-off query generation with no steering. AI Max is hands-off query generation with steering and reporting. That means brand-safety and query-quality controls that lived in negatives now need to live in AI Brief, in account-level brand exclusions, and in the assets you supply. Advertisers who migrate without writing an AI Brief typically find the campaign keeps running but loses the ability to explain why it serves what it serves.
- Write an AI Brief before migration — it is the new control surface for query generation
- Move query-quality logic into account-level brand and content exclusions
- Expect the asset requirements to matter more: AI Max needs more creative variants than DSA did
- Review search terms in the new unified report rather than the old DSA search-term view
Do not migrate on update day
The sequence matters. First confirm conversion tracking is clean under the new reporting model. Then write the AI Brief and confirm asset coverage. Only then let the upgrade run and give it a full learning cycle before judging performance. A DSA campaign that was quietly profitable should not be judged on the first week after an automated structural change — and a DSA campaign that was quietly wasting money is exactly the one worth migrating on purpose rather than letting happen to you.
- Clean tracking first, then structure, then judgement — in that order
- Give each migrated campaign a full learning cycle before comparing it to the old baseline
- Inventory which DSA campaigns were actually profitable before the auto-upgrade touches them
Bottom line
DSA's retirement is the clearest signal yet that Google Search is becoming an AI-managed surface, and manual keyword-only Search management is on its way out. The advertisers who benefit are the ones who treat AI Max as a steering problem rather than a migration chore.
