Data-Driven Attribution Becomes the Only Default in Google Ads
Google Ads moved the final attributions to data-driven models. Position-based and last-click now exist mainly in spreadsheets.
December 2025: Google Ads consolidated attribution models, pushing data-driven attribution into default for conversion measurement while legacy first/last-click and linear models receded from standard setup.
What you need to know
The update in four points:
- Data-driven attribution is the default for most conversion accounting
- Legacy models still computable via data export, not native UI
- Cross-device and cross-channel credit now account for the full journey
- Model changes re-cast every historical KPI — don't compare 2024 vs 2025 blindly
What this means for advertisers
Attribution is the least visible and most consequential setting in any account. If you ever exported 'last click' and compared it to today's numbers, you were comparing different definitions of success.
Next step
Publish a set of comparable KPIs (conversions + revenue, period) that don't depend on attribution model, and keep model-change dates documented so nothing gets falsely credited for a spike.
